OSTEOSARCOMA STUDY

OSTEOSARCOMA STUDY - UPDATE FALL 2006 (excerpts)

Patti Clark

Health Committee

Researcher Kerstin Lindblad-Toh has made an interim report to the AKC which has been accepted and so the study continues.  The other breed included in the study is the Rottweiler, and samples have been collected from affected and control dogs in both breeds.  The purpose of the study is to use gene mapping to identify areas of similarity in dogs that have developed osteosarcoma that are different then normal dogs over the age of ten years.

Although the testing is currently limited to Greyhounds and Rottweilers at the point, seven other parent clubs and

two other groups have joined us to support the research, which will hep their breeds as well.

There have been 245 Greyhouhnds recruited for the study so far, most of them NGA, but a few AKC dogs have been included in the affected and control groups. (AKC - 1 case and 5 controls)  Recruitment of Rottweilers has been the the same.  Using Rottweiler samples, 134 genome scans have been performed with four areas of interest  discovered.  The next step will be to complete the scan of all samples, compare the Greyhound genome areas of high association with osteosarcome to the Rottweiler areas, and to map the sequences of DNA to finer detail, possibily to one or two genes.

For the Greyhound community, the analysis is currently underway and the final report for this study should be available between April and June 2007.

OSTEOSARCOMA STUDY – UPDATE 5-06
Helen Hamilton, DVM
Health Committee Chair

Researcher – Kerstin Lindbloh-Toh, Broad Institute, Cambridge, Mass.
Goal  - To determine a genetic marker for osteosarcoma in the greyhound breed.

The Broad Institute is searching for genetic markers for canine osteosarcoma.  The GCA is one of several participating AKC Parent Clubs through designated funding.  Blood samples from both unaffected and affected Greyhounds are needed.  At present, about half a dozen samples from unaffected older Greyhounds have been provided, along with several from affected dogs.  Please review the downloadable forms and ask your vet whether your dog is eligible to participate in this study.  Owners with older healthy veteran Greyhounds that will be participating at the Western Specialty this summer are asked to contact Dr. Hamilton.

Ideally, blood samples and pedigrees from 120 unrelated dogs affected with osteosarcoma and 120 unrelated healthy dogs over 9 years old are needed.  The dogs must to be unrelated at the grandparent’s site on the pedigree.  Older dogs are preferred because they will have had time to develop osteosarcoma if they are predisposed.
Owners are responsible for obtaining the blood sample, shipping costs (nominal) and providing a two generation pedigree.

How can you help?  If you have a Greyhound with osteosarcoma or an unaffected dog that can serve as a control, please download the attached Ostosarcoma form and Vet Form and contact your vet for sample collection.
